Van Castle

Explore the imposing and historic VAN KALESİ, a castle that offers panoramic views and tales of ancient times.

Van Castle

Van Castle (Van Kalesi) is located five kilometers from the city center and was constructed by Sarduri I, King of Urartu, between 840 and 825 BCE. The ancient city of Tushpa, the capital of the Urartian Kingdom for at least a century, lies within this remarkable fortress. Around the castle, visitors can explore significant structures, including the Analı-Kız Open-Air Temple, the rock tombs of Argishti I, Menua, and Sarduri II, the "Thousand Stairs," and the fortress walls and niches. Also, significant Ottoman structures, including the Süleyman Han Mosque, contribute to the historic fabric of Van Castle, showcasing a blend of Urartian and Ottoman heritage. The impressive silhouette of Van Castle is defined by its fortified walls, towers, and bastions, built with rubble, adobe, and cut stone materials, lending it a majestic view from the north. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, the castle was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List in 2016. This remarkable site offers history enthusiasts a unique journey through the legacy of both the Urartian and Ottoman eras.
