Tokat Museum

The museum work in Tokat began in 1926 when retired teacher Halis Turgut Cinlioğlu stored collected artifacts in Gökmedrese. In 2012, the Tokat Museum was relocated from Gökmedrese to the Tokat Bedesten in Sulusokak. The Bedesten, built during the reign of Sultan Mehmed I in the 15th century, showcases archaeological and ethnographic artifacts. In the museum's archaeology hall, findings from Maşathöyük and the ancient city of Komana, Hittite tablets, Hellenistic swords, and Roman bronze statues are displayed. The coin collection is enriched with coins from the Anatolian Seljuks, the Ottoman Empire, and Venice. The ethnography hall exhibits items representing folk life, with notable displays including Tokat ceramics and one of the oldest manuscripts of the Quran from the Seljuk period. In the garden, stone artifacts, sarcophagi, and gravestones from the Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods are on display. With its rich collections, Tokat Museum serves as a significant cultural center for both archaeological and ethnographic insights.
