After the Eastern Roman era, the Turks called it “Uzuncaburç” by giving it the name of the Hellenistic Tower, the symbol of the city. Today, the visitors can see some important monuments in the region such as Hellenistic Tower (Helenistik Kule), Sütunlu Cadde (Street with Columns), City Gate (Şehir Kapısı), Zeus Olbios Temple (Zeus Olbios Tapınağı), Tyche Temple (Tyche Tapınağı), ancient graveyard, and ancient theatre.

Heaven & Hell Sinkholes

The Cennet (Heaven) and Cehennem (Hell) sinkholes are located near Silifke, Mersin, and are formed by the collapse of limestone due to underground water erosion. The Cennet Sinkhole is 250 x 110 meters wide and 70 meters deep, featuring a cave with a small 5th-century monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary at its entrance. Visitors can access the bottom of Cennet via a 450-step staircase. The Cehennem Sinkhole, 128 meters deep, has no access to the bottom due to its concave shape. According to mythology, Zeus temporarily imprisoned the monster Typhon here. Near Cennet, the Temple of Zeus, originally from the Hellenistic period, was later converted into a church, though parts of it have not survived.

Asthma Cave

The cave is located in Narlıkuyu Bay, Hasanaliler Neighbourhood in Mersin Province, Silifke District, 600m southwest of Cennet Pothole. It is a 200m long natural cave with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. The air quality inside the cave is believed to be beneficial for those with asthma. The cave is named after a tradition where cloth was tied to trees around it and wishes were made. The cave is descended using a spiral iron ladder and dates back to the 3rd geological period. Its interconnected galleries are adorned with large stalactites and stalagmites formed by silica mineral accumulation. The cave experiences high humidity levels, reaching 85 percent in summer and 95 percent in winter.

The Silifke Museum was established in 1958 and later moved to an independent building and officially opened in 1973. The museum features various halls showcasing artifacts from different historical periods. The Hall of Stone Works displays artifacts from the Archaic, Roman, and Eastern Roman Periods, including a remarkable Armored Emperor Statue from the 2nd century CE. The Coins and Jewelry Hall exhibits a wide range of items such as gold and silver ornaments, ancient coins, and jewelry pieces from different civilizations. The Hall of Archaeological Works showcases finds from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellenistic and Roman, and Eastern Roman periods, including vessels, seals, and relics. Additionally, the Hall of Ethnographic Works displays folkloric items still used by local people, such as traditional clothing, rugs, weapons, and accessories. The garden exhibition area features various architectural elements, statues, sarcophagi, and artifacts from different historical periods, including the Ottoman era.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed in this house during his first visit to Silifke on 27 January 1925. The museum displays belongings from the room where he stayed, documents related to cooperative establishment, photographs, and newspaper articles from his visit. In addition to its historical significance, the museum also exhibits local ethnographic items, showcasing the region's cultural heritage.

Thekla spread Christianity in the region and performed miracles from this cave. After her disappearance, the cave became a sacred worship site, later converted into a church in the 4th century CE.
