Giresunlular Cemetery

More than a cemetery, it stands as a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the 47th Regiment volunteers from Giresun, who fought under Topal Osman against the occupation forces during the Great Offensive and the Battle of the Commander-in-Chief. On the night of August 26, 1922, the regiment, consisting of volunteers from Giresun and its surroundings, launched an assault that lasted 36 hours. They repelled enemy forces at Dedesivritepe, where 14 Giresun volunteers were martyred and buried the same day. In 1964, Ahmet Halis Asal from Giresun, after visiting the battlefield, decided to build a memorial cemetery in honor of his fallen comrades. With the support of Giresun-born General Ali Rıza Erkan, Afyon Governor Ahmet Balkan, and villagers from Doğanlar, the Giresunlular Cemetery, enclosed by stone walls, was completed in 1967.

Afyonkarahisar is one of the symbolic cities of our War of Independence, where the Great Offensive started and was led and directed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Republic was established as a result of the Great Offensive launched in this city and the Pitched Battles. In Afyonkarahisar, there are martyr’s cemeteries (şehitlik) and monuments of Mustafa Kemal, heroic soldiers, in order to keep the memories of the Mehmetçik (heroic soldiers of the Turkish Army), who were martyred in the Great Offensive.
