Pergamon Acropolis Archaeological Site
Pergamum, founded in the 3rd century BCE as the Attalid dynasty's capital, developed into a major cultural, scientific, and political hub in the Aegean region. Notable monuments from this period include the steep theatre, Gymnasium, Great Altar of Pergamum, and the Kybele Sanctuary. Under Roman rule from 133 BCE, Pergamum became the capital of the Roman Province of Asia, with structures like the Asclepion Sanctuary and the Trajan Temple added. During the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) period, the city diminished in size but retained religious importance as one of the Seven Churches of Asia. The Ottomans later integrated the city's Roman and Eastern Roman (Byzantine) layers with mosques, markets, and other urban structures. Pergamum’s multi-layered heritage, blending Hellenistic, Roman, Eastern Roman (Byzantine), and Ottoman influences, earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.
