Meteor Pit

Unlock Cosmic Wonders at Meteor Çukuru - Türkiye's Astral Jewel!

Meteor Pit

Located 35 kilometers east of Doğubayazıt and 2 kilometers northeast of the Gürbulak Border Gate, this meteor pit is the second largest in the world in terms of depth and size. The pit is believed to have formed as a result of a large meteor that fell in 1892. This cylindrical natural pit suddenly opened one night within the cracked basalt layers covering Tertiary limestone, causing the springs of Gülveren village to run muddy the following morning. The tremor caused by the impact was felt over a wide area. With a depth of 60 meters and a diameter of 35 meters, the meteor pit stands out with its almost cylindrical shape.
