İskender Pasha Mosque

Experience the historic charm of İskender Paşa Mosque, a testament to Ahlat's rich heritage.

İskender Pasha Mosque

"Discover an architectural gem of the Ottoman era in the heart of Eastern Anatolia - the İskender Pasha Mosque and Complex in Ahlat, Bitlis, Türkiye. Following Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's second Iran campaign in 1548, Ahlat and its surroundings became definitively part of the Ottoman Empire. İskender Pasha, who played a pivotal role in the architectural development of Ahlat and the surrounding region, sponsored many public structures, including the İskender Pasha Mosque and Hammam complex.

Situated within the inner fortress of Yenikale and constructed on sloping terrain, the İskender Pasha Mosque was built with elegant brown andesite stone, reflecting a timeless simplicity. The mosque features three inscriptions in Arabic and Persian, including one dated 1564-65 above the main entrance, marking the construction year. Additionally, the minaret inscription dates back to 1570, and another inscription identifies the ""Great Master Architect from Ahlat,"" showcasing the artisanship of the time.

Despite the challenges of invasions and natural disasters, this historical treasure stood strong until the late 19th century, bearing witness to Ahlat's rich history. Its austere yet majestic exterior is adorned with pointed-arch windows, and on the west side, near the minaret, a unique loopholed section adds a defensive charm to the design.

Immerse yourself in history, faith, and Ottoman artistry by visiting the İskender Pasha Mosque, where the presence of centuries-old craftsmanship and spirituality offers a truly profound experience."
