İşhan Monastery Church: A Timeless Journey into Artvin's Spiritual Legacy.

İşhan Monastery Church

The İşhan Monastery Church, located in the village of İşhan, consists of a church and a chapel. According to a manuscript dated 951, the church was built by Monk Seba, the nephew and disciple of Monk Khandza (759-861), with the support and financial contribution of King Andernese. The construction of the monastery began during the reign of Georgian King David in 955 and was completed in 1027 by Bagratid King Magistros. The monastery also served as a bishopric until the 16th century, continuing its role until the Ottoman Empire took control of Artvin and its surroundings. After the Ottomans seized the region, the western side of the monastery was converted into a mosque, preventing the structure from falling into ruin. It remained open as a mosque until 1983.
