Harmandöven Ejder Caravanserai
Harmandöven Ejder Caravanserai: Echoing Centuries of Stories and Tranquil Serenades of an Ancient Silk Road
Reflecting the historical texture of Iğdır, the Kervansaray is located on a secondary road that continues south from the 6th kilometer of the Tuzluca highway, near the village of Taşlıca. Positioned on an old route believed to connect Batumi and Tabriz, this structure stands as one of the last examples of Seljuk caravanserai architecture from the late 13th or early 14th century, characterized by its courtyard-less and rectangular layout. The caravanserai, which has no foundation deed or inscription, has been preserved to this day with its sturdy stone craftsmanship and rubble stone infill on the exterior. Various mason's marks on the walls showcase the craftsmanship of the period. Its portal, adorned with striking geometric and floral motifs, enhances the aesthetic value of the structure. As a beautiful example of Seljuk stonework, the Iğdır Kervansaray offers visitors a portal to the past, standing resilient against time with its enduring historical texture. The caravanserai was built during the Seljuk period by Amir of Surmari, Şerafettin Ejder Bey, along the caravan route between Batumi and Tabriz, which was one of the Silk Road's side routes.
