The castle served as a governing center for the Kingdom of Bagrat, the Atabegs of Çıldır, and the Ottomans. As one of the most important castles in the region, it stands out as the only example of a walled city structure with its inner castle surrounded by fortifications. The castle also draws attention with its various remains from different historical periods, including an inscription belonging to Suleiman the Magnificent. The Adakale district of Ardanuç, with its Gevhernik Castle, İskender Pasha Mosque, and tombs, is a significant historical site.
