St. Paul Memorial Museum

The St. Paul Memorial Museum was commissioned by the Orthodox Arab-Rum Community in 1850. Over the years, it served various purposes until it was allocated to the Ministry of Culture in 1994, whereupon it was renamed the St. Paul Memorial Museum, honoring St. Paul, who was born in Tarsus. Restoration works, initiated in 1997, were completed by 2001, and the museum was subsequently opened to the public. The church features a rectangular plan with three naves, and its central nave is adorned with frescoes. These include depictions of Jesus Christ, the Gospel writers Yohannes, Mattios, Marcos, and Lucas, as well as an eye motif and a bird figure. On either side of the apse window are portrayals of landscapes and angels. The floor of the church is covered with white and black marble slabs, and there is a bell tower located at the northeast corner. Visitors, both local and international, often participate in religious services held at the museum.

Historical Tarsus Houses

One of the important values keeping history alive in Tarsus is the Historical Tarsus Houses (Tarihi Tarsus Evleri). Built of stone, mudbrick and wood, these houses offer a unique opportunity to touch the history of Tarsus and the region as well as to feel the nostalgia.

Cleopatra's Gate

The city walls built in the Eastern Roman period had three gates: Mountain Gate (Dağ Kapısı), Adana Gate (Adana Kapısı) and Sea Gate (Deniz Kapısı). The walls of Tarsus with three very strong doors were demolished by İbrahim Pasha of Egypt in 1835, and the only remaining gate was the Sea Gate remained. According to the legend, when Cleopatra, popular Egyptian queen, came to Tarsus to meet with her lover Roman General Antonius, she entered the city through the Sea Gate. For this reason, it was also called Cleopatra Gate (Kleopatra Kapısı).

Tarsus Museum

The Tarsus Museum, originally opened in 1971 in Kubat Pasha Madrasah, relocated to the 75th Year Cultural Centre in 2000 and later moved to the Old Courthouse Building in 2020. The museum has two floors, featuring both archaeological and ethnographic sections. The archaeological section showcases artefacts from the Chalcolithic to Eastern Roman periods, collected through excavations and purchases in the Tarsus region. The Ethnography Hall highlights the rich Çukurova culture, displaying metalwork, weaving, and everyday items that reflect the social, religious, and philosophical beliefs of the people of Tarsus.

Kırkkaşık Bedesten

Kırkkaşık Bedesten (Kırkkaşık Çarşısı) in Tarsus mesmerizes visitors with its 500-year-old historical atmosphere. Justinianus Bridge

Justinian Bridge (Justinianus Köprüsü), built on Çark River (Melas Çayı), which drains the waters of Sapanca Lake (Sapanca Gölü) into Sakarya River, is one of the most magnificent structures in Anatolia of the Early Eastern Roman Period. Built by Justinian (527-565), this stone bridge is 365 meters long, 9.85 meters wide and has a total of 12 arches. Previously called "pons" (bridge) in Latin, the bridge did not have a specific name. Later, people who did not know that "pons" meant "bridge" in Latin perceived this word as a proper name and called the bridge as Pontogephyra meaning "Bridge of Pons". Later, this name turned into Pentegephyra (Five Bridges), but the bridge is neither five-piece nor five-arched in one form or another. Justinian’s Bridge was included in the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage in 2018.

Tarsus Waterfall

The Tarsus Waterfall in the Tarsus district of Mersin Province was formed as a result of the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian diverting the course of the river in order to protect the city of Tarsus from the inrushes of water. Surrounding the waterfall there are cemeteries dating back to ancient times. In spring, the waterfall offers beautiful natural scenery, and in summer, you can cool off in its icy water. Tarsus Waterfall is located 25 minutes by car from Adana city center and 20 minutes from Mersin city center.

Tarsus Grand Mosque (Tarsus Ulu Cami) known as Mosque-i Nur, is located in the centre of Tarsus and is one of the prominent works of Turkish-Islamic art. The mosque was built in 1579 during the Ramadanid era and its minaret is decorated with black and white marbles bearing the characteristics of Mamluk architecture.
