Çatalhöyük Archaeological Site

Çatalhöyük, an archaeological settlement dating back around 9,000 years ago, is an exceptionally well-preserved and one of the most important Neolithic settlements. It is crucial for understanding human prehistory, particularly the transition from nomadic to settled life. This site is remarkable for its large size, long-lasting habitation, and unique layout of back-to-back houses with roof access, reflecting an early urban structure based on egalitarian principles. Over 2,000 years, Çatalhöyük witnessed the transition from small villages to urban centers, introducing domestic cattle, increasing population density, and developing elaborate rituals and figurative art, all while maintaining a strong sense of community and equality. Çatalhöyük was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012, recognized for its outstanding testimony to the Neolithic period and its role in the early development of human society.
