The exact time and the identity of the person who built the historic castle situated on a hill overlooking the city of Bayburt are unknown. Accessible by crossing the Zigana and Kop Mountains, Bayburt Castle is located on the trade route that connects the Black Sea to the Basra Gulf. It is surrounded on three sides by the Çoruh RiveThe most notable feature of the castle is its turquoise-colored tiles. During the Seljuk period in the 12th century, the walls were adorned with purple, sky blue, green colors, and various patterns. In 1647, Evliya Çelebi, who visited Bayburt, wrote about a neighborhood with 300 houses and the presence of the Ebü'l-Feth Mosque.
