Balık Lake

Located 26 km from Taşlıçay and 60 km from Doğubayazıt, Fish Lake (Balık Gölü) lies within the borders of both districts. Situated at an altitude of 2,241 meters, it is one of Türkiye’s highest lakes. Fed by small streams from surrounding mountains, springs along its shores, and underground waters, this lava-blocked lake has a maximum depth of 37 meters. As it is classified as a protected area for drinking and utility water, the lake supplies nearby settlements with potable water. Due to its diverse water sources, data on its flow and continuity have not been determined. The lake is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) due to the breeding population of velvet ducks on a 0.15-hectare island within the lake. Known for its renowned red-spotted trout, Fish Lake also supports a variety of wildlife, including eagle, hawk, partridge, wild hare, fox, wolf, wild duck, seagull, quail, and snipe. The lake is surrounded by farmland and grazing areas, making it a unique ecosystem. In winter, the lake freezes completely, creating ideal conditions for winter sports. With beaches and facilities on its southern shore, it also offers opportunities for trekking around the lake.
