Aspendos Ancient Theater

The Aspendos Ancient Theater, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, is one of the most distinguished representatives of the Roman Period theaters today, both for its architectural features and its good preservation. Dedicated to the gods and emperors of the period, the structure exhibits the last lines of Roman theater architecture and construction technique. The Aspendos Theater is not only the best preserved theater of the Roman period, but also the best designed theater of its period. The Seljuk Turks restored the ancient theater nearly a thousand years later for use as a caravanserai and palace, and this renovation ensured that the theater has survived almost intact. It is the only example of an ancient theater where the stage building stands at its original height. Only the statues in the niches are missing.
