Ancient City of Korykos
The city of Korykos, located 60 kilometers southwest of Mersin, has a rich history dating back to the Hellenistic Period and reaching its Golden Age during the Roman Period. It was founded by the Cypriot King Korykos and minted coins in his name in the 1st century B.C. The architectural remains in the city, such as the port gate, temples, churches, Colonnaded Street, and baths, indicate the wealth and prosperity it once enjoyed. Korykos was also the terminus of aqueducts and canals carrying water from the Llamas River, highlighting its importance through the Middle Ages. The city is associated with legends, such as the story of the Black Castle and Maiden's Castle, built for defense purposes and inspired by a king's attempt to protect his daughter from a prophesied snake bite. Conquered by various rulers over the centuries, including the Ottomans, Korykos eventually lost its significance with the passage of time.
