Albayrak St. Bartholomeus Church
Discover the historic Albayrak St. Bartholomeus Church, a testament to religious and architectural heritage.
The church is located in Albayrak village in the Başkale district, on a hill overlooking the Great Zap Valley. There is a common belief that the church was built in the 4th century on the Tomb of Saint Bartholomeus. However, based on sources referencing the monastery and the church, it is thought that the structures were built at the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century. According to some sources, during the diocese of Vardapet Kirakos and under the governance of Husrev Sharif, the governor of the Hakkari region, which was part of the Ottoman Empire, the church underwent repairs in 1651. This church, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, has managed to stand the test of time.
