Unravel Time in Manisa, Experience the Mystery of Aigai’s Ancient Echoes!

Aigai Archaeological Site

Aigai, one of the twelve Aiol cities mentioned by Herodotus, dates back to the 8th century BCE and became a significant commercial center during the Hellenistic period under the Kingdom of Pergamum. Aigai, located in the province of Manisa, was established on the Gün Mountain in the Yunt Mountain Range, which was named Aspordene in ancient times. Ancient cities had been usually using a symbol of the city or an important product of their economy on their coins. On the bronze coins minted by the city of Aigai, the depiction of a goat was often used. Since 2004, excavations have uncovered ruins such as the theatre entrance (vomitorium), city walls, a three-storey agora, a parliament building (bouleuterion), a stadium, and the Temple of Demeter, all of which can be visited today.
