The ram-headed gravestones found in all old cemeteries throughout the Iğdır plain (Ararat plain) are the lasting traces from the Karakoyunlu Period. According to the Karakoyunlu tradition, these gravestones were erected on the graves of brave and heroic individuals, as well as young people who died early. The Karakoyunlu inherited this tradition from the Central Asian Turkish Culture, as they were a nomadic society whose economy was based solely on animal husbandry. Additionally, two locations in Iğdır bear names related to the Karakoyunlu: one is the Karakoyunlu District, and the other is the village of Kuzugüden in the central district. The ram-headed gravestones are exhibited at the "Karakoyunlu Open-Air Museum," located 15 kilometers northeast of Iğdır city center in the Karakoyunlu District. A few of the black basalt gravestones from Mount Ağrı that have survived to this day are currently under conservation.
